This property is wild and full of native plants and animals.

We are right next to Hartlen Point which is one of the most important migratory headlands in Nova Scotia. Between us and Hartlen is forest which serves as a nursery for many birds each spring and summer.

My “yard list” of birds is conveniently kept for me at eBird – Home Nolas Life List – eBird I think you have to login to see it, but currently my total for yard sightings is 95 species.

We also have woods behind us, and ocean in front of us.

An offshoot of Smelt Brook runs along one side of the property which attracts many migrating birds such as this Northern Waterthrush.

Was delighted to have a flock of Northern RedPolls visit in winter of 2026. They did not stay long and I was lucky to get a quick photo.

I’m a bit like the Lorax of Southeast Passage and cry for every tree that is felled but trees are the nurseries of Mother Nature. From May through the summer almost every tree has a nest. Through the winter they provide food and shelter for birds and other creatures. If there are ever no birds, rest assured that soon there will be no people. Our entire food chain relies on them as they scatter seeds and are natural pest control.
